Every place on Earth is part of a watershed—the area where rainwater flows downhill to rivers, lakes, or oceans. Understanding watersheds helps us study water pollution, flooding, wildlife habitat, and where our drinking water comes from. However, mapping these areas has traditionally been difficult, requiring expensive software and specialized training. The Global Watersheds App lets anyone find and map watersheds with just a few clicks. Users simply click on a world map, and the app instantly shows the watershed boundary and river network for any spot on Earth, including massive river systems like the Amazon.
The app also creates detailed reports showing important information about each watershed, including climate, population, land use, and how human activities might affect the water. Users can download their maps in formats that work with other mapping software, making it easy to use the results in research projects or classroom activities.
Since launching, the app has been used by thousands of people worldwide—from high school students learning about their local environment to scientists studying global water systems. By making watershed analysis simple and free, the tool helps more people understand how water connects us all and promotes better stewardship of our water resources.
