The Southern Ocean is rich in the nutrients like those that we put in our gardens that are rich in nitrogen and phosphorous. However, phytoplankton growth is unable to consume these nutrients because they need iron to grow. We found that iron from an erupting submarine volcano located 2000m deep in the ocean was able to reach the surface ocean, providing iron to the biologically productive surface layer of the ocean.
