Research practices within the settler-colonial institutions (SCI) have usually resulted in ecological damages and other undesirable long-term outcomes, even when the intended goal is for the betterment of society. To translate SCI scientific research into wholistically beneficial outcomes, new ways of thought within SCI research disciplines is needed, including a realignment of values and relationship to Earth.

From the perspective as a young woman educated in SCI spaces, and studying the physics of clouds, I learned to regard clouds as relatives and reinforce this by incorporating the paradigm of four 'R's into regular research procedures: relationship, respect, responsibility, and reciprocity.

This small-scale example is meant to explore questions about how SCI scholars can realign their values and relationship with Mother Earth, and how to bring indigenous values into every-day research practices.
