Northern Idaho is projected, by the end of the century, to experience temperature increases of 10 to 15°F and up to ten times the area burned annually by wildfire. These drastic changes pose serious challenges for ecosystems, communities, and land management practices in the region. In this presentation, we will share preliminary findings from a series of semi-structured qualitative interviews and focus groups conducted with members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe as well as land managers and stewards in St. Maries, Idaho. These individuals are on the front lines of adapting to an increasingly climate-precarious and fire-intensified landscape. Our research explores how local knowledge, historical practices, and cultural values intersect with current adaptation strategies and perceptions of risk. We aim to highlight emerging themes that may inform more collaborative, culturally responsive, and place-based approaches to climate resilience. This work contributes to a growing body of knowledge focused on climate adaptation in fire-prone rural and Indigenous communities.
