Bioaerosols are atmospheric aerosol particles derived from myriad sources in the Earth System, including viruses, bacteria, fungal spores, pollen, and other plant fragments. They vary in size and shape, composition and cloud-influencing abilities, and emission source. In addition to potential climate and atmospheric impacts, many bioaerosols impact human health via inhalation. These dominantly organic particles have been challenging to identify in the atmosphere, although interest in their atmospheric transport and fate is burgeoning. Bioaerosols may be altered by, and in turn alter, physical or chemical atmospheric processes, leading to a unique biome of organic particles in the atmosphere. This session was inspired by a recent Bioaearosols in the Earth System workshop to identify interdisciplinary frontiers. It will focus on observational and modeling studies of all types of bioaerosols, their interactions, fate in the atmosphere, socio-environmental impacts, and frontier research questions interconnecting Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, Biogeosciences, and GeoHealth.
