Energetic particles precipitating to low altitudes echo a complex chain of transport, energization, and loss mechanisms that sculpt their populations from the magnetotail to the inner magnetosphere. Changes in low-altitude particle distributions reflect the structure of the equatorial magnetotail, providing a powerful tool for remotely sensing its evolution across multiple scales. This session brings together studies of nightside magnetospheric processes that control energetic particle populations in the ring current and radiation belts with analyses of low-altitude particle precipitation for remotely sensing magnetospheric dynamics. Leveraging low-altitude spacecraft measurements, this session will explore electron and ion energization, loss mechanisms, and their connections to equatorial magnetotail and ionospheric processes. Theoretical studies and simulations of plasma kinetics, including wave-particle interactions and particle precipitation, are also welcome.
