Thunderstorm electrification and lightning have intrinsic ties to the microphysics, kinematics, and thermodynamics of deep convection. These relationships motivate the use of lightning data to inform about convective properties and can be extended to address complex interrelationships between lightning and essential climate variables, including temperature, clouds, precipitation, NOx, and aerosols (https://public.wmo.int/en/programmes/global-climate-observing-system/essential-climate-variables). Multi-instrument observations from ground and space (low Earth orbit and geostationary) have driven a rich research history in lightning meteorology, while new and emerging remote-sensing techniques promise to extend observations throughout the globe. This session invites discussions on advancements in lightning meteorology that address fundamental relationships between ground-, air-, and space-based lightning observations and thunderstorm microphysics, kinematics, and dynamics on local and global scales. Abstracts that address lightning-convection relationships; explore remote sensing measurements, techniques, or detection algorithms; or discuss applications of theoretical or simulated meteorological and/or electrical properties are also encouraged.
