The last decade has seen a proliferation of research on improved methods for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions quantification focused on metropolitan areas. Studies have addressed a range of topics: the urban biosphere, the natural gas distribution system, the connection between air quality and GHG emissions, and understanding related uncertainties. We invite presentations addressing these and other related topics utilizing diverse measurements and models with resolutions ranging from a metropolitan area to individual buildings. Presentations may cover both top-down (in-situ or remote sensing observations of atmospheric GHG concentrations) and bottom-up (activity and emission-factor based) methods, including tools being used by local governments for their own emissions tracking. We encourage presentations on studies bridging the gap between different atmospheric and activity-based estimates. This session will also honor the contributions of Dr. James Whetstone, who retired from NIST this year after 52 years, the last 18 leading NIST’s GHG Measurements Program.
