Non-perennial and variably inundated ecosystems (e.g., intermittent/ephemeral rivers; agricultural and urban drainage systems; wetlands; vernal ponds; and hillslopes) are spatially ubiquitous, temporally dynamic, and vitally important for physical, ecological, and biogeochemical processes. These systems also act as a critically important nexus between social and economic issues surrounding the regulation of waterways with impacts on both downstream water quantity and quality. This session explores the diverse and complex processes occurring in non-perennial and variably inundated ecosystems, bringing together physical, ecological, and socio-economic perspectives. We encourage submissions that explore the drivers and impacts (e.g., biogeochemical, organismal) of connections (e.g., network, landscape, subsurface) mediated through hydrologic state transitions. We highlight observational, experimental, policy, monitoring, and/or modeling approaches across spatial and temporal scales that focus on the processes, management, and protection of these systems.
