Impulsive events at or near the Earth’s surface that involve mechanical oscillations of the ground, ocean, or atmosphere can induce upward-propagating atmospheric waves, leading to detectable disturbances of the upper atmosphere. Such impulsive events include but not limited to earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, tropical cyclones, and man-made activities. The session solicits theoretical, observational, and modeling contributions to characterize and understand the atmosphere-ionosphere coupling during impulsive events. Studies on specific aspects of the coupling process, for instance the excitation mechanisms of atmospheric acoustic-gravity waves, their dynamics, and the modulation of ionospheric plasma, are all welcome. The session also calls for recent updates on the atmospheric and ionospheric responses to the 2022 Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai eruption event. Furthermore, the session seeks novel techniques and real-time algorithms to detect and identify the ionospheric disturbances driven by impulsive events, as well as original concepts to infer impulsive source properties from the ionospheric disturbances.
