Hurricane Katrina impacted the Gulf Coast as one of the most devastating and destructive storms in modern history on August 29th, 2005. Katrina has since served as a benchmark and worst-case scenario for other locales, causing governmental policy and public awareness to change in response. What lessons have been learned in the past 20 years for the Gulf Coast and beyond? In this town hall, we seek to facilitate an interdisciplinary dialogue between academic, community, government, NGO, and industry partners regarding the experiences and insights from Hurricane Katrina. Through this, we hope to discuss how best to establish scientifically informed and community-based decisions and policies that reduce hazard risks and build resilient communities in a changing climate.
