Over the past 20 years, the field of data sonification has experienced a significant increase in activity across various disciplines, including astronomy, solid Earth geoscience, and oceanography. At the 2022 AGU meeting, Dr. Roseanne Ford and Rhea Braun hosted a Town Hall focused on sonification as an emerging tool for data exploration. This interest has continued, leading to new initiatives and funding opportunities. The National Science Foundation has recently supported a planning grant to promote multidisciplinary data sonification projects in the geosciences—the Geo SonNet.This Town Hall seeks to introduce the community to Geo SonNet and provide updated information on resources, the current landscape of sonification projects for both quantitative and qualitative data exploration, and strategies for assembling teams with the necessary skills to create perceivable, interpretable, and accessible sonifications. We will begin with a panel featuring developers of new data sonification projects in the geosciences. Topics will include the significance of sound design in crafting effective products, the value of incorporating blind and low-vision professionals into the development team, and methods for implementing effective evaluations. Additionally, we will discuss potential funding opportunities.Following the panel, breakout sessions will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss their specific ideas and needs.
