Heavy ions (i.e., not protons) within planetary environments serve as important tracers for a multitude of plasma phenomena, such as ionospheric outflow, moon-magnetosphere and surface-plasma interactions, mass loading and transport, magnetic reconnection, and wave instabilities. This session solicits studies focusing on (1) data-driven analyses to reveal the sources, evolution and controlling factors of heavy ion flows, (2) the use of theoretical models and numerical simulations to investigate how heavy ions contribute to plasma dynamics, and (3) new mission or instrumentation concepts that can measure the properties of heavy ion flows. We invite researchers from solar, magnetospheric and ionospheric physics, as well as planetary science. We highly encourage comparative studies of different planetary environments throughout the solar system, including but not limited to the inner planets, outer planets and their moons.
