The cycling of essential nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron, has played a vital role in shaping Earth’s biosphere and climate throughout the Cenozoic. Coupled with the carbon and oxygen cycles, nutrient cycling drives key feedbacks that influence productivity, ecosystem evolution, atmospheric CO2, and major environmental transitions. The Cenozoic offers a rich archive for investigating how nutrient dynamics responded to and helped regulate changes in the Earth system. This session invites contributions that explore nutrient and carbon cycling during the Cenozoic, using geochemical records, modeling approaches, or methodological advances. We welcome studies across a range of time intervals and oceanographic settings that shed light on how nutrient availability, productivity, and redox conditions influenced past interactions between the biosphere and climate. Our goal is to bring together diverse perspectives to advance understanding of nutrient cycling in Earth’s recent history and its relevance for future change.
