This session aims to convene researchers and practitioners to exchange insights regarding the geomechanical behavior of salt caverns under diverse thermo-hydro-mechanical conditions for the underground storage of energy resources and waste materials. Contributions are invited that investigate the following themes: (1) the mechanisms that govern viscoplastic behavior and micro-cracking in salt rock; (2) innovative modeling methodologies spanning from fracture to reservoir scales; (3) the effects of geological and hydrological heterogeneity associated with various salt types; and (4) the implications of operational scenarios, including the frequency of injection and production as well as the types of materials stored. By promoting interdisciplinary dialogue, this session aims to enhance understanding of salt cavern stability and improve the safety and efficiency of underground storage solutions. SNL is managed and operated by NTESS under DOE NNSA contract DE-NA0003525.
