Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), are vital to primary productivity and to food and climate security, yet increasing nutrient inputs have triggered serious environmental and health consequences. Nutrient accounting methods, which quantify inputs and outputs of nutrient budgets (and their uncertainties), are key to sustainable nutrient management and support agronomic, biogeochemical, and climate modeling. This session invites research on measuring, analyzing, and projecting nutrient budgets across system types (e.g., crop and livestock production, atmospheric deposition, waste flows) and spatial scales (e.g., farm, city, watershed, national). We seek contributions that assess methodological advances, data innovations, and persistent challenges in nutrient accounting. Approaches to communicate nutrient budget information and that identify promising approaches to reducing imbalances are welcome. By fostering dialogue and discussion about research across scales, this session aims to improve the tools and approaches needed for more precise and actionable nutrient assessments in support of environmental sustainability and policy development.
