While health risks from extreme weather, zoonoses, and emerging chemicals are increasing, many institutions that have typically managed and responded to these risks are being weakened. This includes the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization and the loss of research and surveillance capacity within the U.S. government. Other geopolitical changes such as changing of global trade patterns and possible relocation of different extractive and manufacturing industries are also likely to have health impacts. Changes within the U.S. present challenges but also create opportunities to create new institutions at state and local levels, which may be more responsive to local conditions and constraints. This session convenes experts to discuss opportunities and strategic priorities for research and reallocation of responsibility between state/local and national authorities in the U.S. and elsewhere.
