The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems (UGOS) Initiative strives to improve the skill of ocean circulation forecasts at space and time scales relevant for a broad community of stakeholders. The UGOS research combines diverse ocean observations and data assimilative ocean circulation models to advance forecasting skill of the four-dimensional ocean circulation of the Gulf of Mexico, including the Loop Current and Loop Current eddies. This session invites presentations to highlight scientific and technological improvements in forecast skill of ocean circulation within the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere. Presentations are encouraged on advances that inform risk reduction on oil and gas operations, hurricane forecasts, and fisheries. The session will provide a forum for contributions that enable improved operational forecast skill of Gulf circulation with a focus on applications.
