Natural wetlands (inland and coastal) and agricultural wetlands (e.g., paddy rice) provide essential ecosystem goods and services and play an important role in biodiversity, carbon cycling, and public health. Over the last few decades, wetlands (area, type, structure, function) have been changing rapidly under intensive human activities and climate change. This session aims to showcase recent advances in remote sensing and modeling of wetland dynamics, including wetland area dynamics, driving factors, ecological and societal impacts, as well as carbon fluxes and stocks. This session invites presentations that (1) use multiple-source remote sensing datasets and novel techniques quantify wetland dynamics from local to region and global scales; (2) investigate diverse factors driving wetlands dynamics; (3) evaluate the impacts of wetland changes on the environment, public health, and society; and (4) predict spatial-temporal changes of wetland carbon fluxes and stocks and its contribution to the dynamics of atmospheric greenhouse gases concentrations.
