Damaging earthquakes can occur far from tectonic plate boundaries, where shaking impacts large areas because of low seismic attenuation and amplification by sedimentary deposits. Long time intervals between intraplate earthquakes and low strain rates pose challenges to understanding seismic hazard in central and eastern Asia, central and eastern North America, northern Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. However, expanding seismic or GNSS networks and new techniques (e.g., deep learning) facilitate the development of high-precision earthquake catalogs, detailed geophysical images, robust geodetic and geodynamic models, and thorough characterizations of intraplate earthquake sources. Together with these geophysical approaches, investigations of intraplate structural geology, rock mechanics, and paleoseismology improve understanding of and preparedness for this enigmatic seismicity. All studies of intraplate seismotectonics and low-strain-rate continental regions are thus welcome. We especially hope to attract research on the Korean Peninsula and analogous settings in the tectonic far-field, such as central and eastern North America.
