A new generation of solar-reflected imaging spectrometers and thermal infrared imagers is revolutionizing Earth surface studies. These include orbital investigations such as NASA’s ECOSTRESS and EMIT, which are precursor instruments for NASA’s upcoming Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) designated observable mission. Ready availability of data from EMIT, ECOSTRESS, and related missions, which include DESIS, EnMAP, HiSUI, PACE, PRISMA, and anticipated missions like CHIME, GLIMR, LSTM, SBG, and TRISHNA portend a new era of Earth surface science.This session will survey airborne precursor research and new results from existing orbital instruments. We will highlight progress in translating local models to address Earth system questions at regional and global scales. Our themes include: coral reef surveys; geology and volcano investigations; terrestrial ecology and biodiversity studies; land-atmosphere interactions; aquatic ecosystems and water quality monitoring; hydrology studies, including ice and snow; land and water use studies; wildfires; greenhouse gas emissions; urban studies; and more.
