A career in research and academia can be very rewarding, but can come with different challenges that can negatively impact the mental health at any career stage. These work-related stressors, together with individual life challenges, can lead to unhealthy conditions that are difficult to navigate. A positive development in recent years has been that conversations about well-being and mental health are becoming more common, opening an important door for those going through hardship to avoid feeling isolated, and making it easier to understand how to deal with stressors and seek help. Given today’s climate of funding uncertainty, this session will focus on navigating careers during challenging times. We will facilitate a conversation between panelists from diverse backgrounds and experiences, along with the audience, to explore steps we can take to maintain our mental wellbeing while making decisions about the next stages of our careers.
