Natural climate and environmental changes of the last 5 million years (the Plio-Pleistocene) provide prime opportunities to understand the dynamics of the Earth system and to answer societally important questions regarding the sensitivity of global temperature to greenhouse gas concentrations, and the sensitivity of sea level/ ice volume to global climate. Some of the key climatic intervals of this period include the warm Pliocene, the Pleistocene onset of northern hemisphere glaciations, and the intensification and lengthening of glacial cycles at the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. This session combines observational and modeling studies that seek to characterize the evolution and dynamics of Earth’s large-scale climate over the last 5 Ma. We encourage submissions that focus on long-term trends, the role of greenhouse gases, changes to glacial cycle dynamics, and the potential to increase understanding of past warm periods.
