Weather and climate models continue to suffer from systematic biases, many related to missing or inadequately represented processes caused by shortcomings in Earth System Models (ESMs). It is essential to pinpoint and understand reasons for these ESM biases, and then to improve overall model performance justified on physical grounds. This session aims to bring together researchers/scientists across the community who work on a range of numerical modeling/infrastructure advancements in ESMs. We welcome contributions that: (1) help identify, understand, and resolve biases in ESMs (including but not limited to biases in mean climate, trends, and characteristics/dynamics of specific processes), (2) leverage observing systems to constrain parameterized processes, (3) develop and assess various model physics, and (4) share corresponding research from various testbeds and operational centers. The session echoes the AGU theme this year: “Where Science Connects Us” by fostering better understanding of fundamental issues in cutting-edge models and exploring potential solutions.
