The NASA-GLOBE program has passed an important milestone. In reaching its 30th anniversary GLOBE proves itself to be a rich repository of Earth system science knowledge generated by citizen scientists and students. The GLOBE archive is rich not simply as a repository of in situ measurements—more than 250M—but also in lessons generated in science pedagogy (from K-gray), network-building and long-term workforce development. GLOBE is currently assessing and refining its programmatic aims, with it vision relying on the growing proliferation of mobile devices; interactive capabilities of social media tools like learning management systems and video conferencing; AI, open data and cloud-based data access and analysis tools that collectively democratize science. GLOBE’S evolving goals are to: (i) Harness accelerating technological capabilities to ensure its relevance for the next 30 years as a source of data and research and (ii) Grow program participation so that every participant has ready access to scientific research experiences and data literacy training, as part of a community of changemakers striving to monitor and manage the 21st century environment through innovative experiential science. This Town Hall is dedicated to reviewing past accomplishments, presenting future plans, and securing input from the AGU community on pathways forward.
