The international sunspot number (SN) is the recalibration of the Zürich sunspot number (RZ) that is measured and served at the WDC SILSO. This modernization provides a consistent extension of the most-analyzed observational solar-variability time series available. Following the first recalibration, the current reconstruction effort includes a re-examination of the sources underlying SN and ways to join the observational records. The SN working group is accumulating original drawings, particularly during the various temporal gaps in coverage before 1825. The goals of this session are to provide an update on recent improvements in the SN record and seek community feedback. This includes a wide range of subjects such as: Increase the cadence of the released data? Can AI/ML algorithms ingest the hand-drawn images to fill in gaps? Works describing how SN can be improved to match the user needs or ways to implement SN in modern algorithms are solicited.
