Flooding is the natural hazard with the greatest economic and social impacts in the United States. Modeling urban flood risk poses substantial challenges due to the multi-scale and multi-process nature of urban flood hazards and the complex exposure and vulnerability dynamics that interact with these hazards to determine risk. Quantifying future risks and identifying adaptation strategies is further challenged by the deep uncertainties surrounding future sea levels, precipitation, populations, and infrastructure, as well as political and economic constraints. This session invites contributions aimed at improving the understanding and quantification of urban flood risks, including but not limited to: quantification or modeling of multi-scale, compound, and/or cascading hazards; characterizing exposure and vulnerability drivers and dynamics; comparison and validation of flood and infrastructure risk models and/or decision making frameworks; insights gained from engagement with stakeholders and decision-makers; and identifying adaptation strategies which leverage generalizable insights and are applicable across watersheds.
