Headwater streams make up nearly 80% of the total channel lengths of river networks and exert a critical physical and ecological influence on downstream environments. Many headwater catchments lack legal protections and have experienced degradation due to historic and contemporary human alterations. The heterogeneity and distribution of headwater streams further complicates data availability and adaptive management. Successful headwater management thus requires interdisciplinary science to fill data gaps, integration of creative process-based solutions within existing constraints, and diverse partnerships to respond to changing conditions. This session will highlight advancements in the science and practice of measuring, protecting, and restoring headwater catchments. Abstracts could address, but are not limited to 1) emerging trends to measure, monitor, and understand headwater catchments, 2) interdisciplinary understanding of headwater response to climate extremes and other pressures, and 3) restoring headwaters for ecosystem and community resilience.
