Groundwater fluxes to inland lakes, the Great Lakes, and coastal oceans have often been overlooked in models, with limited observational data leading to gaps in understanding hydrological and ecological dynamics. Recent research highlights groundwater as an important driver of physical processes, especially in coastal/nearshore areas, influencing ice formation, stratification, wave dynamics, mixing, and currents. These inputs also shape biophysical processes such as harmful algal blooms, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem productivity. This session seeks to advance scientific discussion on quantifying groundwater impacts across diverse spatial and temporal scales. We welcome studies using numerical models, innovative observations, and conceptual frameworks to explore groundwater–surface water interactions in environments from small lakes to large marine systems, including the Laurentian Great Lakes and coastal margins. By integrating interdisciplinary insights, the session aims to foster a deeper understanding of groundwater’s role in shaping aquatic ecosystems.
