The high-latitude Earth systems (HLES) have experienced some of the most dramatic environmental changes over the past decades, which emphasize the complexity and interconnectedness of HLES within the global Earth system. Key examples include strong trends and variabilities in snow/ice cover, ocean heat storage, surface air temperature, and extreme weather events. To advance knowledge of the underlying mechanisms and increase predictability of the HLES, expanded observational networks, process resolving coupled Earth system models, and machine learning techniques are critical.This session invites presentations on HLES topics from the atmosphere through to the biosphere including local events/processes, coupling across the HLES, and global impacts. Synthesis of observations with physics-based or data-driven modeling results, investigations of internal variability, forced responses, and explorations of extreme events in the polar regions, as well as polar/lower-latitude teleconnections and their predictability are particularly welcome.
