Decades of research shows that scientific work becomes more valuable when a large audience can access and incorporate its findings into their lives. Yet, scientists still struggle to achieve this goal. The nonprofit Black in Marine Science (BIMS) is a conduit between researchers and our societies, creating stronger communication channels that spread environmental awareness. A new initiative called the Tidal Wave (TW) Program engages a multi-generational cohort of scholars in the marine sciences who receive professional development, mentorship, and opportunities to put these goals into practice. This session invites presentations from Tidal Wave participants who will share their insights, experiences, and lessons learned with the audience about the ways scientists can authentically engage communities with their science. Following the presentations, an extended Q&A invites an interactive conversation with presenters and the audience about the ways scientists can better engage non-scientist communities to foster a more just and inclusive science.
