Climate change is already having disproportionate impacts on historically marginalized communities, and it is imperative that the needs and priorities of those community members are centered during climate research, adaptation, and mitigation efforts. To achieve this, we must engage and train diverse climate experts from all parts of society in ethical community-engagement principles and multidisciplinary research approaches. As the impacts of climate change become easier to feel and see, there have been increased efforts to merge community goals and research objectives to solve problems and address future uncertainties. In the fifth iteration of this annual town hall, we anticipate a conversation that focuses on how geoscientists and climate scientists are engaging with environmental justice issues through their research, teaching, and service. Discussion topics will include strategies for funding and publishing environmental justice research, for building equitable university-community partnerships to address environmental justice issues, for training the next generation of climate scientists in cross-disciplinary community-engaged research, and for bridging basic and applied science to address community needs. This town hall will feature presentations and a Q and A with a panel of experts working on community-based research that addresses climate change and environmental justice.
