In 2016 the US Department of Energy established a decadal experiment to assess the impact of whole ecosystem warming of a boreal peat bog, and to determine whether warming would lead to a net release of stored carbon, and if elevated CO2 treatments would temper any carbon release. After a decade of treatments and comprehensive measurements by dozens of National Laboratory, university and international collaborators, the treatments will end as planned in 2025. In this Town Hall, we will summarize key findings, describe synthesis activities, share implications for regional modeling, and highlight remaining unknowns. We will share the potential for novel sampling and measurement opportunities from the broader community after treatments end in 2026, and for the application of unique modeling approaches using an extensive collection of online data. This Town Hall targets empiricists, modelers, peatland experts, and disturbance and resilience researchers. Everyone is invited to attend so they can learn about remaining opportunities within this unique decadal ecosystem experiment.
