Sea Level Rise threatens the livelihoods of millions. The Greenland ice sheet has the potential to raise global sea levels by an astonishing 23 feet were it to melt completely. Slowing the rate of ice loss is therefore of utmost concern not only for coastal communities, but to avoid shocks to global economies and infrastructure. Some experts now propose that sea level rise should be a policy metric. The Upper Limit for Sea Level Rise sets a global standard that addresses sea level rise directly, offering a tangible metric that communities, leaders, and nations can rally around. Sarah Das, Polar and Climate Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will present the impacts of the Greenland Ice sheet on coastal communities by video, and Kim Ross, Co-Executive Director of ReThink Energy Florida , presents the Upper Limit as a second metric. Cara Fleischer, media relations consultant and member of the nation Creation Justice team for the United Methodist Church, will speak to the implications for climate communications.Rafe Pomerance and Sarah Das will appear by video only.
