Glacial retreat is among the most visible indicators of climate change, with profound and far-reaching impacts on physical landscapes, hydrological systems, ecosystems, and human communities. As glaciers shrink across polar and alpine regions, their retreat raises sea level rise, alters freshwater availability, reshapes landscapes, and transforms downstream ecosystems and livelihoods. This session aims to bring together researchers across disciplines to explore the global consequences of glacial retreat from both scientific and societal perspectives and discuss potential mitigating strategies. Topics may include but are not limited to observations or models for monitoring change, geohazards associated with glacial retreat, ecosystem responses, socioeconomic and cultural dimensions of glacier loss and strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of glacial retreat. By bringing together case studies, integrative syntheses, and novel methodologies, this session seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and identify knowledge gaps and research frontiers in understanding glacial retreat and its cascading impacts.
