The principal goal of this session is to place geogenic contamination in context, where we examine the role of contingent geological histories in assessing modern aquifer vulnerability. We aim to facilitate a dialogue between disparately working groups of researchers: 1) those whose research attempts to understand the fundamental controls on ancient sedimentary depositional systems, where subsequent burial, lithification, and diagenesis structure the modern hydrogeologic system and distribution of strata-bound metals; and 2) those who seek to understand the release, transport and cycling of those metals in the modern environment. We welcome submissions across a range of disciplines (e.g., geohealth, hydrology, sedimentary geology, cyclostratigraphy, isotope geochemistry, geoscience education) and locality-specific contaminants (e.g., uranium and lithium in the Western US, arsenic in the Newark Basin). In particular, we want to highlight contributions from those looking at the evolution of these systems in response to future changes in temperature and precipitation.
