Increasing water demands and decreasing water quality in many water supplies are conflicting with the safe access to sustainable water supplies worldwide. The dominant water demands by the agricultural sector are becoming subject to growing scrutiny due to the expansion of urban centers and emerging industrial sectors and conflicts. Such demands are also exposed to floods and droughts, compromising the water and food security of individuals, communities, and the human enterprise. Thus, understanding how physical and social processes and their interactions are affected by extreme events and future climate changes are critical. This session invites presentations exploring the physical and/or social processes leading to increases in water and food security risks in the past, present, and future, including land surface changes, impacts of extreme events, diversions and their impact on transboundary agreements, as well as presentations focused on technologies designed to enhance food and water security in a changing world.
