Hydrologic intensification is a unique facet of the climate response to greenhouse forcing, characterized by jointly amplified wet and dry extremes and coupled changes in sub-annual precipitation and evaporation. It has broad implications for ecosystems and society, but its evolution and impacts are very uncertain. In many regions, especially arid and semi-arid zones, this intensification leads to persistent aridification trends—long-term declines in soil moisture, vegetation productivity, and water availability. This session invites interdisciplinary research that advances our understanding of the land and atmospheric dynamics, impacts, and governance of water-cycle intensification, aridification and associated compound climate extremes. We welcome research that explores how the intensification affects hydrologic stocks and fluxes (evapotranspiration, runoff, soil moisture, groundwater), vegetation responses, agriculture, the carbon cycle, and feedbacks between climate and terrestrial systems. We especially welcome submissions that address the governance, early warning, and cross-scale adaptation strategies for managing compound extremes and aridification in vulnerable landscapes.
