The representation of adaptive human action in human-Earth system models spanning multiple sectors has traditionally been simplified, potentially mischaracterizing the response to external shocks. For example, many MultiSector Dynamics (MSD) models lack realistic human systems dynamics or characterize human resource demands as fixed or uniform. These shortcomings are critical as human action is arguably the paramount determinant of MSD systems’ vulnerability and resilience. The session seeks to highlight improved representations or in-depth analyses of adaptive human action in MSD modeling. These improvements may relate to novel data sources, empirical techniques, or modeling approaches. We broadly invite submissions across disciplines (e.g., earth systems modeling, behavioral psychology, etc.), methodological modeling approaches (e.g., agent-based, economic, optimization, etc.) and domains (agriculture, water, energy, transport, etc.), illustrating the diversity of approaches that can be applied to MSD research on coupled human-natural system dynamics.
