Permafrost regions are experiencing rapid and accelerating environmental shifts, which threaten the stability of ecosystems, infrastructure, and Arctic communities. This session highlights interdisciplinary work at the intersection of permafrost science, engineering, geophysics, and landscape adaptation. We welcome studies that explore the impacts of permafrost thaw on hydrology, slope stability, vegetation, and infrastructure, as well as those that address scaling between field observations and regional models, using a variety of approaches. These approaches include, but are not limited to, in situ, remote sensing, and laboratory observations of permafrost and active layer processes; thermal dynamics and infrastructure-ground interactions; geophysical and geotechnical techniques for identifying and mitigating permafrost degradation; data assimilation efforts. Contributions integrating Indigenous knowledge, community-based monitoring are particularly encouraged. This session supports work aligned with initiatives such as the Thermal State of Permafrost (TSP), Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring, and U.S. Arctic Observing Network, to advance understanding of permafrost evolution.
