Stable, radioactive, and radiogenic isotopes, trace elements, and noble gases are routinely utilized within the critical zone and hydrologic sciences to quantify transport, subsurface flow paths, sources, residence times and reactive processes. New analytical techniques, experimental designs, and modeling approaches have enabled investigation of the coupled structure of fluid transport and solute transformation as well as system exchanges and feedback processes on many levels, from micro- to regional scales. This session invites presentations that highlight new and diverse applications of innovative tracers in field systems, laboratory experiments and numerical models. It further aims to bridge bio-hydro-geo-eco communities by showcasing studies that use tracers to enhance our understanding of the Critical Zone and/or to advance relevant stable isotope methods and application techniques. We particularly encourage presentations that seek to connect scientific results to decision support in collaboration with stakeholders and transdisciplinary approaches that improve process understanding.
