Transboundary river basins cover more than 47% of the Earth’s land area, providing home to 3 billion people in 150 countries. Although transboundary river basins are hotspots for cooperation, cross-boundary sources of friction impede functioning institutional arrangements and mutually beneficial infrastructural development of international waters, especially during prolonged droughts. Climate change, hydrologic variability and uneven water availability among neighboring countries increase uncertainties surrounding the effectiveness of transboundary water resources management institutions and practices. This session will be a platform to discuss innovative ways to navigate challenges in transboundary water resources management, including technological advances, assessment frameworks, science diplomacy and coalitations aimed at better coordinating the management of transboundary water resources. Submissions are encouraged in diverse areas related to conflicts in transboundary river basins, sustainability and management of water resources that cross international borders, and scientific networks that facilitate cooperation to address research needs in transboundary river basins.
