Water infrastructure such as dams, reservoirs, and levees are critical for water-energy-food systems by providing services such as irrigation, water supply, electricity, flood control, food and transportation. Through their need for infrastructure, these systems often create negative externalities that disrupt critical ecosystem services. To resolve these tradeoffs, emerging evidence highlights the need for interdisciplinary, data-driven, system-scale approaches that identify infrastructure portfolios that maximize direct benefits while minimizing environmental and social costs. These approaches must consider infrastructure impacts on biotic (e.g., fish migration) and abiotic processes (e.g., sediment transport), socio—cultural aspects (e.g., recreation, spirituality), and system connectivity (e.g., riverine-coastal linkages), as well as future demands for infrastructure services, and non-traditional solutions such as green and grey/green infrastructure. We invite perspectives reflecting advances, challenges, and avenues in interdisciplinary science for the coordinated planning, construction, operation, and removal of infrastructure for sustainability across water-energy-food nexus, and perspectives on socio-ecological aspects of infrastructure planning.
