Understanding phase transitions and multiphase interactions in porous media is critical to predicting the evolution of Earth's subsurface systems in a range of environmental and energy applications. In the context of saline permafrost, gas hydrates, snow and glacier hydrology as well as subsurface gas storage, this session explores the fundamental role of water phase transitions in shaping the thermal, hydrological, mechanical, and biogeochemical dynamics of porous media from pore to landscape scale.
We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that investigate water across all phases (vapor, liquid, and ice) and the mechanisms governing phase transitions—including evaporation, condensation, freezing, thawing, and sublimation—in open/closed systems and under confined/unconfined conditions. By bridging laboratory and field observations with modeling efforts in pore and continuum scales, this session aims to foster integrative approaches that improve predictions in applications such as permafrost and glacier evolution as well as gas plume stability under Ostwald ripening.
