Contaminants have adversely impacted agricultural and industrial productivity, but also caused potential risks to human health and the environment. These include conventional contaminants (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients, harmful algae, pesticides, chlorinated solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), and newly emerging contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), microplastics, and 6-PPD. There is a pressing need to improve process-based understanding of contaminant fate, transport, and transformation to develop new cost-effective strategies for contaminated site management, remediation, and risk assessment. This session invites laboratory- and field-scale studies, mathematical modeling, and data analysis in: 1) contaminant sampling, instrumentation, and quantification technologies; 2) contaminant occurrence, distribution, and source zone evaluation; 3) contaminant fate and transport in various environmental compartments, including unsaturated and saturated zone; 4) contaminant transformation, bioaccumulation, toxicity, and risks; 5) contaminant remedial technologies; and 6) artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) for advancing contaminant fate, transport, transformation, and remediation in the environment.
