Water is fundamental to sustaining ecosystem functions in water-stressed environments, which cover 40% of the terrestrial land surface and support at least 2 billion people. In these environments, a tight coupling exists between water availability, ecosystem productivity, surface energy balance, and biogeochemical cycles. Both physical (e.g., CO₂, temperature) and anthropogenic factors (e.g., agricultural expansion, irrigation, energy development) are increasingly affecting dryland water dynamics. We welcome submissions focusing on the ecohydrological processes and feedbacks in water-stressed environments and their implications for a broad range of issues, including ecosystem change, land use change, water resources, desertification, soil salinization, irrigation management, and the food-energy-water nexus.
