Land subsidence is a critical concern in coastal areas worldwide, and increasingly a main driver of coastal relative sea-level rise (SLR). In addition to natural processes (tectonics, compaction, glacial and sediment isostatic adjustment, growth faults), human-induced (aquifer over-exploitation, hydrocarbon production, peat oxidation, and urbanization-related loading) processes often cause subsidence to exceed the rate of climate-driven sea-level rise. To understand these effects, it is necessary to assess subsurface processes at the appropriate spatial and temporal scales.This session invites contributions across various disciplines to deepen our understanding of land subsidence and its impact on coastal relative SLR. We welcome studies on monitoring, modeling, and quantifying vertical land motion; disentangling processes driving subsidence; projecting future subsidence; assessing impacts; and developing mitigation and adaptation strategies. Especially contributions that bridge disciplinary gaps to enhance projections of coastal relative SLR are welcomed, aligning with the International Panel on Land Subsidence (IPLSubsidence.org) initiative.
