Geospace comprises different particle populations with widely different energies that coexist and interact with a variety of waves. It is commonly referred to as a ‘system of systems’ to acknowledge its complex behavior that could not be understood by analyzing the individual components alone. Unfortunately, the low-energy (cold, <100 eV energy) particle populations are very poorly understood due to the difficulty of their measurements. This holds back geospace research, particularly systems level understanding. The focus of this session is on geospace processes that are mediated by the cold plasma. Contributions on cold plasma research (measurements, modeling, known and suspected impacts, different domains such as ionosphere, magnetosphere, solar wind or magnetospheres of other planets) are welcome, together with contributions targeting the coupling of the cold particle populations with the rest of the geospace environment, the signatures of such processes and their systems-level impacts. Space mission concepts are also strongly encouraged.
