To achieve carbon neutrality, scalable and cost-effective atmospheric CO2 removal (CDR) is urgently needed. Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) in working lands aims to accelerate natural weathering processes by amending agricultural soils with ground silicate rock. In some cases, ERW may be coupled with organic amendments, for coupled inorganic and organic carbon drawdown. But key unknowns limit accurate CDR quantification: ERW-organic matter interactions, ERW impacts on soil microorganisms, discrepancies between modeled and observed CDR rates, storage/transport of weathering products in multiple soil and groundwater pools, and associated spatial/temporal delays between weathering and CDR. Before widespread adoption, ERW must be accountable, including social acceptance and reliable measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) standards. In this session, we welcome basic and applied ERW studies that advance our ability to quantify its CDR potential, co-benefits and risks, its effects on agroecosystems, and investigations into public perception and policy.
