Fog and low clouds connect Earth systems in their formation and impacts on the biogeochemistry, ecohydrology, and thermodynamics of ecosystems. Fog transports water and aerosols, and scatters light. These characteristics influence ecosystem functions and surface processes, impacting societies both directly and indirectly. For example, fog reduces solar radiation, enhances humidity, and induces or lengthens wet canopy conditions. Fog also affects systems such as agriculture, transportation, renewable energy, and human health. Through artificial harvesting or interception by vegetation canopy, fog supplies water to sustain ecosystems, recharge groundwater, and for human consumption. This session explores the recent advances in our understanding of fog as a system, examines future changes in fog and low clouds, and their impacts on ecosystems and societies. We welcome submissions on observations, modeling, prediction, and theory, especially those exploring interdisciplinary research and connecting research with the needs and interests of a wide range of partners and community members.
